What is Pokemon?

"Pokémon" is not a single character, but rather a term used to describe the fictional creatures that are central to the Pokémon franchise. In the world of Pokémon, these creatures, called Pokémon (short for "Pocket Monsters"), are caught, trained, and battled by humans known as Pokémon Trainers. There are over 1200 different species of Pokémon, each with its own unique traits, abilities, and characteristics.

The franchise also has prominent human characters, such as Ash Ketchum, the main protagonist of the Pokémon anime series, and Professor Oak, who serves as a mentor to new trainers.

While "Pokémon" refers to the creatures themselves, it also encompasses the entire brand, including video games, TV shows, movies, trading card games, and merchandise. It’s a vast universe of characters, both human and Pokémon, all contributing to the cultural phenomenon that has lasted for decades.

Pokemon

Pokémon, short for "Pocket Monsters," is a media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, with the first video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo in 1996. It was inspired by Tajiri's childhood interest in collecting creatures and his love for nature. The Pokémon franchise quickly expanded into trading cards, television shows, movies, toys, and more, becoming a global phenomenon. The core concept revolves around capturing, training, and battling fictional creatures called Pokémon, which come in various types and abilities. Today, Pokémon remains one of the highest-grossing entertainment franchises worldwide, with over 1200 species across games, multiple generations, and an ever-evolving trading card game. Pokémon’s popularity is sustained through regular game releases, such as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as well as the ongoing appeal of mobile games like Pokémon GO, which encourages players to explore the real world to catch Pokémon. The franchise continues to captivate fans of all ages, with new generations of players joining in as it evolves.
